Finding the Balance: Screen Time Tips for Parents of Primary School-Aged Children

In today’s digital era, managing screen time for children has become a common challenge for parents and carers. Establishing clear boundaries and encouraging a balance between screen-based and offline activities is crucial for healthy development.

Top Tips for Managing Screen Time for Children

  1. Set Clear Boundaries: Define specific times when screen use is allowed, and ensure these rules are consistently followed. Avoid the 'one more minute' negotiations. Boundaries will vary from family to family but stick with what is comfortable for you.

  2. Encourage Diverse Activities: Promote a mix of screen time with activities such as outdoor play, reading, and family games.

  3. Lead by Example: Demonstrate healthy screen habits to set a positive example for your children. This is easier said than done - especially as many of us use our phones and or tablets for work.

  4. Use Technology Wisely: Choose educational and interactive content that contributes to learning and development. Ensure that the apps used are age-appropriate and are monitored closely using the parent safety measures provided.

Tip of the Day: Create a "Tech-Free Zone" in Your Home

Designate certain areas in your home as "Tech-Free Zones." These spaces, free from screens and digital devices, can become spots where family members can unplug and engage in activities such as eating, reading, playing board games, or having meaningful conversations. In our house, we don't allow any phones or tablets at the table. Mealtimes are our precious times for connecting as a family. We also don't allow devices in bathrooms or bedrooms.

Healthy Screen Time Limits

Understanding and implementing healthy screen time limits is essential. According to screen time guidelines, primary school-aged children should have a balanced approach, integrating digital and non-digital experiences into their daily routines.

By following these tips, parents and carers can successfully manage their children's screen time, ensuring a healthy and well-rounded lifestyle.
