Building Confidence in Your Child: Top Tips for Raising Self-Assured Kids

Updated: Jun 10, 2024

Confidence Boosters for Kids

Confidence is like a muscle – the more you work on it, the stronger it gets. Encouraging your child to try new things, praising their efforts, and helping them set realistic goals are all essential steps to build their self-esteem.

Tip of the Day: Create a "Bravery Journal"

Get your child a special journal where they can jot down moments when they felt brave or confident. Whether it's speaking up in class, trying a new sport, or making a new friend, writing these down can be a powerful reminder of their achievements. Review the journal together regularly to celebrate their progress and reinforce their growing confidence.

Fun Ideas to Boost Confidence:

  1. Start Small: Set small tasks or challenges that require your children to be brave. If we are in a restaurant or cafe and need something bringing to the table, a particular sauce, piece of cutlery, napkin or glass of water etc., we challenge our children to help us ask for it. Sometimes we get a flat refusal (ok - so welcome to our real life - sometimes our kids don't want to help or they're grumpy about something else) and sometimes, they jump at the chance. It's the children's way of contributing to the event. Our children always get a sense of success and helpfulness when what they have asked for arrives at the table.

  2. Try New Activities: Encourage your child to explore new hobbies or activities. It could be anything from joining a sports team to learning a musical instrument. The key is for them to step out of their comfort zone and experience success in different areas.

  3. Praise Effort, Not Just Success: Recognise the effort your child puts in, regardless of the outcome. This teaches them that trying and persevering are what truly count, boosting their resilience and confidence.

  4. Set Achievable Goals: Help your child set small, realistic goals. Achieving these goals can provide a sense of accomplishment and motivate them to tackle bigger challenges. (Something I need to remember too!)

  5. Positive Affirmations: Teach your child the power of positive self-talk. Encourage them to use affirmations like "I can do this" or "I am capable" to build a positive mindset.

  6. Celebrate Failures as Learning Opportunities: Show your child that failing is part of the learning process. Discuss what they can learn from their mistakes and how they can improve next time. Be real and show where you have made mistakes too! My kids always love hearing a good story about how I have made mistakes and then turned things around.

  7. Role Models: Share stories of people who have overcome challenges and achieved great things. This can inspire your child and show them that confidence and success are attainable.

Engage and Connect:

Building confidence isn't just about big gestures; it's also about everyday moments. Spend quality time with your child, listen to their thoughts and fears, and provide consistent encouragement. Your support and belief in them are the foundation of their confidence.

Incorporate these confidence boosters into your daily routine, and watch your child's self-assurance grow. Remember, confidence is a journey, and every step forward, no matter how small, is a victory worth celebrating.
